>Do you see that you are getting visitors but no one but you is commenting? Feel like you are talking to yourself?  Wish more people would drop by and say something? Anything? I may be new to having my own blog, but I am not new to blogging.  I am a follower of many blogs and have been for years.  For a long time I was a learker, never feeling comfortable or invited to participate in the disscussion or or contribute to the content.   Because of my experience on the the opposite side of the blog, I wanted to share some things I noticed would prompt me to comment on your blog:

1.Encourage people to subscribe to your feeds.

Simply the more people who visit, the more comments you are likely to have.  By readers subscribing to feeds they will always know when you have new posts for them to  comment on.

2. Making leaving a comment easy!

It’s best not to request that visitors register to leave comments, this is time consuming for your guest and requires personal information that most people would rather not share. I would forget about  using captcha (the wanky letters and numbers that hurt your eyes, that sites make you enter to prove you are a real person).  This may prevent spammers but it will definitely prevent guest comments as well.  Just make sure you moderate your comments or add a plugin that will help catch spammers.

3. Let people know you are listening.

Respond to you comments.  Let them know about what you think about what they have to say.  It needn’t be a one way conversation on their end either!  This will promote readers to continue to comment on your other posts.

4.  Be respectful.

It’s perfectly ok to disagree with a comment, but doing so in a rude or disrespectful way will not encourage others to participate in the conversation.

5.  What are people interested in

You will probably notice that some of your posts are more comment friendly than others.  Review your post and comments to see if you detect differences in content or style of writing.  Maybe you’ll even notice that you have impletmented some of these tips!  Another way to do this is to have a good states tracker, to better understand who your demographic is, so that you may better focus on posts that would actually appeal to yourlargest  population of readers.

6. Leave open ended posts.

Ask questions of your readers, engage them.  Let people know you want their opinions, suggestions or critiques. Don’t  talk an issue to death, leave something for people to add and the think about.  Unless of course you feel that you an expert on the topic, and are not interested in other’s input, if that is the case you probably wouldn’t be reading this post, and you can always turn comments off.

7. Ask people to comment.

Let people know that you want to hear from them. Encourage those more timid people, by sending out an invite to your guests to participate. You may not mind posting for the whole world wide web to view..But not everyone has a blog or feels comfortable sharing their thoughts, so letting your guest know you welcome their input and views may encourage feedback.

8. Encourage new commenter’s.

I know that I have been to sites that almost feel like private parties.  Don’t be afraid to comment on your own  post after an ongoing dialogue  encouraging other thoughts or input on the topic.

9. Write good content and write it often.

Writing information that is useful, entertaining, and thought proving will automatically trigger someone to have an opinion about it. The more you post the more people have to comment on.  I find my readers who do  comment, will comment on more than one post  More posts + good content=more comments.

10. Reward good comments.

This can be done simply by letting them know you appreciate your insight, you can have a link to some of the top comments, visiting their blog site and commenting on their posts, to even writing posts that mention their thoughts or link back to their sites. I find that people who do comment are more likely to return to my site, knowing I have an active audience encourages me to continue to write and to improve the quality of my writing.  So I do hope you will take the time to let me know that you were here and let me know if there are other ways I could engage readers to comment. How about you?  Have you found something that helps to attract comments to your blog? P.S. I use Comment luv plugin…..giving luv to my readers with sites :)

I love your advice. I know that in my own reading of others’ blogs, I enjoy a lot of pictures, different fonts, and when long paragraphs are broken up. I don’t always follow suit in my own writing, though…

    • I agree with you there. Especially what you said about the paragraphs. If they get too long my eyes start to go buggy and I lose interest fast. Another interest breaker for me is if the font is too small, or even if the blog is too long. I also enjoy well placed pictures…I thought your blog followed you rules well :) and I found it easy and enjoyable to read!

  • I think I’m doing all of the things you recommended on my blog site but I’m still surprised when some blog posts elicit lots of comments and others don’t. If you have time to visit my site and offer some suggestions, I’d be thrilled!

    • Hi Karyn
You have a great site, I looked through your entire blog!
You seem like one amazing person:)
Keep in mind I am no expert but what I noticed right away as a reader is that you don’t utilize the “insert more tag”. I really believe more people would read more of your content, especially the older posts, if they didn’t have to scroll down entire posts to read the next one. I would take your first paragraph and insert the tag under it. I know I don’t want to spend too long looking for infomation.
I really looked at your posts with MORE than ten comments they were…
Busy, Busy, Busy,I love September, Are We Pushing Our Kids Too Hard?,Customer BEWARE: SwipeBids.com, Kids NEED Recess!,Lemonade Stands Now Illegal?,STUFF the Stuffing Tax,Parenting My Way,Marketing Tail Wags: The Keys to My Success,

What I noticed was that in all of your posts that you have a strong opinion on, you received the most action! In almost all of these post you were posting a “rant”. This is a great way to get people talking on a topic, you write really well and get people to think about how they feel on the subject.

Btw it’s still a new blog, but you have a lot of great content, nice layout, and it seems like quite a bit of traffic…I am sure your blog will take off! Keep in mind most people who received tons of comments have been at that blog for years!

    • I have posted in the past on your site and I did just now too. Because we don’t post often on our posts it’s hard to know what happens.
When I went to post a comment I noticed that you didn’t have the option to link to name/url, only google, typepad,wordpress(.com) etc.
You do have the captcha but what I find confusing is at first I thought my comment was posted becasue after I hit “post comment” the page always scrolls back to the top of the page. I had to scroll down to see that I needed to type in the captcha. You may actually have people click away from the page thinking they have posted. try a test post on yourself to check that out.
      :)

Great tips. I really should add the rss feed for my blog, hadn’t thought of that before, because I don’t usually subscribe (I follow). But that might help my blog a bit.

Thanks for sharing this on Bloggy Moms!

    • I haven’t really used the followers, I guess i want to be careful to not become overwhelmed. If i spend too much time on too many other sites I get carried away and never have time to do my blog…lol…I am saving a lot of sites and I plan to start following when I see which ones I spend the most time on.

Very good points. By the way I gave this post a thumbs up on stumble upon.

I found that writing really good headlines is a great way to get more traffic from the RSS subscribers you already have. Too often we work really hard to build up a large subscribership and then craft headlines for our posts that are boring and we wonder why no one visits our blog.

    • Good point Nick.
I really have to work on the headlines….If I come up with a catchy title it usually doesn’t explain what I am writing about very well.
I love your site by the way, it has great information for bloggers on there, I have subscribed to your feed!
ps. thanks for the thumbs up…I am honored! I don’t know why but I am having a heck of a time trying to register with stumble upon

Hey – I love the part about taking off the captcha…I never thought about that before, but now that you mention it…I freakin’ hate having to put in captcha. LOL I’m running off to my blog to take that off… right now! :)

    Cheers!

    • my eyes always go buggy when I have to enter them like 5 times…..

To prevent spams there are plugins to catch them …I see you use blogspot so I am not sure what options there are. WordPress has a plugin called askimet that catches all my spam!
I like to moderate all comments though, because I like to see what people have to say:)
Some people can choose to have a simple math equation, as their captcha..If ya gotta have one to prevent spam….1+1 is pretty easy..lol

  • Just another thought here….Spell checker for comments.

I don’t have this, but if I can find the plug in for wordpress I will add it.
